"Granny Smith" 6 x 6 oil on canvas panel
I wondered as I painted this apple, how it got it's name "Granny Smith". Thank goodness for Google! I might have lost sleep over this one. The Granny Smith apple was named after a women Mary Ann"Granny" Smith. I'm assuming she had grandchildren and they called her Granny Smith. Anyway, it started in Australia on to New Zealand, United Kingdom and then to the U.S. in 1972. It did go through propagation to be what we have today as our Granny Smith apple. I prefer Macintosh....I wonder how that got it's name.....
